World Bank- Essay competition
Application deadline: February 29, 2004


The World Bank and the College of Europe ask you to reflect on concrete proposals to reduce world poverty. You are invited to share your new thinking and proposals on the role of Europeans in development, and to advocate for a greater European commitment in this domain.
Students from the following countries can participate in the competition: Albania- Andorra -Armenia -Austria -Azerbaijan -Belgium -Bosnia &Herzegovina -Bulgaria -Croatia -Cyprus -Czech Republic -Denmark -Estonia -Finland -France -Georgia -Germany -Greece -Hungary -Iceland -Ireland -Italy -Latvia -Liechtenstein -Lithuania -Luxembourg -the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia -Malta -Moldova -Netherlands -Norway –Poland -Portugal -Romania -Russian Federation -San Marino -Serbia and Montenegro -Slovakia -Slovenia -Spain -Sweden -Switzerland -Turkey -Ukraine -United Kingdom.
An essay competition is being sponsored by the Bank and the College of Europe for people between 19 and 25 who reside in a European country, whether students or not. Three essays selected by the judges will be published. Their winning authors will receive paid Bank internships in Paris, prizes of 2,000 or 1,000 euros, and field visits to Bank projects. Essays should reflect on concrete proposals to reduce world poverty and share new thinking on the role of Europeans in development, as well as advocate greater European commitment in this domain.

Students invited to participate in European awards for innovation

General Information :
  The European awards for innovation will take place during the annual Innovact event, from 30 September to 2 October in Reims, France.
The aim of the award is to single out the best European innovation project in terms of development, growth and employment. The competition is open to students from European universities and higher education institutes similar to France's prestigious 'grandes écoles'.
Projects related to the development of an industrial product or service for the self-employed or enterprises are eligible for participation. Furthermore, projects that have already been launched or are in the process of development can be submitted.
The winner(s)  of the competition will be awarded with the sum of 1,500 euro and the winning project will receive media coverage by a reputable French magazine.
The jury presiding over the awards ceremony will include European Commissioner for Research, Philippe Busquin, and French Minister for Research, Claudie Haigneré.
Also taking place during the Innovact conference are a number of activities aimed at helping enterprise and innovation projects, as well as companies, resolve financial, technological and sales issues.

Call for Papers
ASEN (Association for the Study of Ethnicity and Nationalism) / Nations and Nationalism (journal) Prize
Last year ASEN and Nations and Nationalism established a Prize to encourage young scholars to publish original research in the field of nationalism and ethnicity.
We are proud to announce the Call for Papers for the second year of the competition.
The Prize will be awarded for the best article submitted to Nations and Nationalism, and will be announced at next year's annual ASEN Conference.
It will include a sum of #250 and 2 years free membership of ASEN, and may lead to publication of the article in the Journal.
Submission procedure:
1. All submissions and correspondence should be made to the Managing Editor of Nations and Nationalism (see address below).
2. Submissions may be made by currently enrolled doctoral students and those who have submitted their thesis within the last two years.
3. Submissions must be accompanied by an official letter from the author's supervisor confirming status and eligibility.
4. Articles must be submitted in English and in the Nations and Nationalism house style ('Harvard' system). Please refer to a recent issue of Nations and Nationalism for full Instructions for Authors or contact the Managing Editor.
5. An author may only submit one article for consideration for the Prize. 6. Co-authored articles will not be considered.
7. The Prize Committee reserves the right not to award a Prize in any given year.
