Socrates

Important Remark

The first phase of the Socrates program ended after 5 years on 31 December 1999. The formal decision of the European Parliament and the Council establishing the second phase of the Socrates program (SOCRATES II) was not taken until 24 January 2000. In order to preserve the continuity of the program the decision has therefore been made to implement SOCRATES II in two stages.

In Stage I the actions of the program will run along similar lines to SOCRATES I. Nonetheless, it must be noted that a number of changes have been introduced, in accordance with the SOCRATES II decision. Applicants are therefore advised to read carefully the Guidelines for Applicants 2000 and to use them in conjunction with the Guidelines for Applicants 1998. Both documents are available at the following address: http://europa.eu.int/en/comm/education/socrates.html

Stage II will introduce a number of more substantial changes to the program compared with SOCRATES I. This second stage of implementation will take effect in 2001. The Guidelines for Applicants 2001 should be published in Spring 2000. For certain SOCRATES II Actions the first deadline for the submission of proposals will probably be in November 2000.
