CHF/Romania is paving the way for local improvements of economic and social conditions in Romania. Since 1994, CHF/Romania has dedicated itself to the needs of the region through programs in community enhancement, economic growth and NGO development.
Who We Are
CHF/Romania is the national affiliate of CHF International, a U.S.-based private, non-profit development corporation with current projects in more than 30 countries around the world. CHF International helps people throughout the world improve their lives through development of community, habitat and finance. Beginning in 1952, CHF helped families build affordable housing in rural America and in low-income urban neighborhoods, primarily by organizing local housing cooperatives.
Successes in building sustainable housing cooperatives and other community-based organizations led CHF to replicate these practices, adjusted to the local needs, in many countries. While broadening its work, CHF began working toward the overarching goal of building a better world one community at a time.
In 1994, CHF began operations in Romania focusing on community enhancement, economic growth and NGO development. Today, CHF/Romania is the leading field-based microfinance provider in Romania, with six field offices covering seven counties (Alba, Arad, Bihor, Caras-Severin, Hunedoara, Mehedinti and Timis) in Western Romania. CHF/Romania has dedicated more than $7.5 million USD in development assistance to area organizations and in local economic development efforts through direct infusion of capital and technical assistance activities.
CHF/Romania is a major financial partner of the Romanian-American Enterprise Fund (RAEF) and is one of the largest field-based contractor of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission to Romania.

To achieve its goals, CHF/Romania uses innovative microfinance tools and hands-on technical assistance to local organizations. CHF/Romania is a catalyst for the creation of broad-based Romanian NGO confederations which advocate for and actively support the sustainable economic development of Romanian communities.

Areas of Expertise
CHF/Romania works to improve the quality of life for low- to middle-income Romanian families by specializing in the following domains:

Microfinance: CHF/Romania offers direct microcredit to partner NGOs’ members for small business development and habitat or infrastructure improvements. This simultaneously drives membership growth for the NGOs, which thus leads to increased revenues and the enhancement or enlargement of available services. It also familiarizes NGO members with microcredit mechanisms;

Civil Society/NGO Development: CHF/Romania identifies and supports the creation of local business and homeowner NGOs in target local communities, then trains the associations in NGO management, membership services, advocacy techniques and income-generating strategies;

Project Sustainability: CHF/Romania supports the creation of Community Financial Development Institutions (CFDIs) to serve the individual financial needs (affordable loans and interest-bearing savings products) of the collective membership of the partner NGOs. The CFDIs together with CHF/Romania and the partner NGOs form a Regional Community Development Center. It becomes a one-stop shop for financial needs, business and homeowner service information and serves as a sustainable, locally based take-out mechanism capable of community-leveraged services after the CHF/Romania project ends.
Hot Topics and Upcoming Events
CHF/Romania was selected as one of the three finalists for Global Development Network's (GDN) Most Innovative Development Award. CHF/Romania submitted its INED Project proposal for consideration for the award in August. Over 250 proposals from 73 countries were submitted to GDN for consideration. The INED project was the only project from Europe recognized as a finalist.
