TURKISH SOCIETY OF THE DISABLED (TSD)
Founded in 1958 initially as the Society for the
People with Orthopedic Defects, upon the regular
and active support of the professors from the
Istanbul University, School of Medicine, in 1960
the society has been restructured and renamed as
the Turkish Society of the Disabled (TSD). This
initiative has widened both the scope of the
activities of the society and the target groups.
Today with its offices in 67 cities and
registered members of more than 117.000 people,
the society serves for the legal rights,
well-being, education, support and
rehabilitation of people with all sorts of
disabilities from orthopedic defects to mental
disabilities.
The consistent and insistent work of the Society
volunteers and workers had led to certain legal
gains like the right to drivers' license,
legislations related to the laws governing
workplaces and workers, laws concerning
specifically designed cars for disabled people,
special laws on taxation and etc. during the 60s
and 70s.
In the second half of the 70s, the society has
initiated the organization of special courses,
seminars and workshops for elementary and high
school students on the prevention of
disabilities, as well as the life and problems
of and solutions for disabled people. Besides,
till the beginning of the 80s, the week of 25-31
March was designated and celebrated as the week
of the disabled.
TSD serves as a main provider of support tools
and instruments, including wheel chairs, walking
sticks, prostheses, etc to its members and
people in need in general. Moreover, the society
waives financial support for medical therapy and
operations, educational fellowships and food
support. The society also organizes social
events like picnics, tours, dinners and etc. for
moral support and integration.
Since its foundation, TSD has been a very active
NGO defending the needs and rights of disabled
people leading to positive change in all sorts
of laws, legislation and regulations. It
publishes a monthly journal called Sevgi Çemberi
(Circle of Love) on the life, hope and needs of
people with disabilities, education, protection,
rehabilitation opportunities as well as their
legal rights and other issues. Also to raise the
perception and knowledge of the society on
prevention of disabilities, and to provide a
regular communication port for those with
disabilities, TSD has an active web site
functioning under
